Nancy is taking its cue from Bordeaux and some twenty other local authorities by improving the pavement markings on its cycle lanes.
For the mayor's office, the investment is much more modest than equipping the roads with streetlights. But this paint guides, not enlightens. This doesn't mean that cyclists don't need to invest in lighting equipment for their bikes.
Another advantage put forward by Nancy town council is that the paint avoids generating light pollution, which is harmful to biodiversity. The paint glows for around 10 hours. It is marketed by Olikrom, a company based in Gironde. If the tests in Nancy are conclusive, the mayor's office plans to extend the system.
