The departmental council will be testing an innovation on a bend in a section of the Départementale 771.

Innovation for road safety. That's how you might sum up the test being carried out by the departmental council on the RD 771.

Photoluminescent paint for road safety

Why experiment?

As part of its drive to improve safety on the 4,300 km of departmental roads, the local authority carries out conventional roadworks and improvements. But it also has the opportunity to deploy innovations. In conjunction with the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Solidarity, the Département is testing a photoluminescent road marking process.

What does it involve?

Photoluminescent and retroreflective paint will form the road markings. Its principle is to capture sunlight during the day and release it at night. Its purpose is to improve the visibility of road markings at night.

Where does the experiment take place?

The Département has selected a small section of the Départementale 771 between Châteaubriant and Soudan, in open country in both directions. The paint has been applied over 240 m on the bend and around the Chère river, and over a stretch of 50 m on the north side of the river and 50 m on the south side. This choice was made in order to optimize the visibility of the bend, which should improve safety for motorists.

What's the timetable?

The paint was applied in early May. Over a 3-year period, Cerema, a public expertise body, is evaluating the process. The Département is also polling users, anonymously and online, between May 15 and June 18, 2023.
