Photoluminescent paint

Marquage luminescent sur route

LuminoKrom®, photoluminescent paint with unique performance

Deployed since 2018, our photoluminescent paint is the most effective solution on the market.

It has been specially designed for use on cycle paths and pedestrian areas where there is no or insufficient street lighting.

It's a patented, certified Class G innovation. The paint is charged by natural or artificial light and glows in the dark for 10 hours, without any power supply or CO2 emissions.

The resistance of our photoluminescent paint has been tried and tested for over five years, and the checks carried out show that the lighting process is perfectly stable. Night after night, photoluminescent marking lights up even in undergrowth, whatever the weather or summer/winter cycles...

Today, we complete a project every 2 days throughout the world. By the end of 2023, we'll have more than 450 projects under our belt!

Local plannning : cycle path, pedestrian walkway

The application of photoluminescent paint contributes to the quality of the development by improving the practicability of cycle routes and pedestrian walkways all year round, at any time of day, even in adverse weather conditions.

This illuminated signposting reassures users of these greenways reserved for soft mobility. They can see the route of the path, and can anticipate the presence of a bend or an obstacle...

Let's encourage the use of soft mobility in our towns and cities by making night-time travel safer with our photoluminescent markings.

Cycle paths

Photoluminescent paint on cycle paths and areas dedicated to cyclists improves visibility at night, increasing safety for cyclists. It reduces dependence on street lighting, saving energy.

Greenways

Photoluminescent paint on greenways improves night-time safety, reduces the need for street lighting, saves energy and creates a pleasant and safe walking experience by guiding users in the dark.

Pedestrian areas

LuminoKrom® paint in pedestrian areas helps guide pedestrians in low-light conditions, enhances safety and reduces the risk of accidents by creating a safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians.

An eco-sustainable and economical solution

The most eco-sustainable lighting solution

LuminoKrom® is a paint with a low environmental impact. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was carried out by an expert consultancy (APESA) on the basis of all the raw materials, their origins, compositions, safety data sheets and modes of transport.... Like certain fish and seaweed, our paint exploits the natural phenomenon of luminescence. It recharges indefinitely in natural light and glows diffusely in the dark. This paint has been designed to create luminous signage at night with little or no impact on light pollution, in the order of a few dozen millicandelas. A comparative estimate for one kilometre of cycle path shows that luminescent signage emits 10,000 times less light than public lighting!

Energy-saving illuminated signs

The impact on visual pollution of photoluminescent marking is also very low compared with the installation of vertical lighting masts. Another advantage for the infrastructure of tomorrow is that this luminescent signage is an economical solution: 50 times less expensive than street lighting. Luminescent paint requires no major work or specific maintenance, and can be installed quickly. It makes it easy to make accident-prone areas without street lighting safer, particularly in rural areas.

A range of high-performance photoluminescent products

All our photoluminescent paints are produced at our industrial site in Pessac, France, using rigorous manufacturing processes and under the constant supervision of our production control laboratory.

The resistance of our photoluminescent paint has been tried and tested for over five years, and the checks carried out show that the lighting process is perfectly stable. Night after night, photoluminescent marking lights up even in undergrowth, whatever the weather or summer/winter cycles...

Applying it to the ground is as quick and easy as conventional road marking.

LuminoKrom®, a technological innovation

Technologie innovante avec pigments phosphorecents

Labelled technological innovation

Our innovation lies in the fact that we have developed photoluminescent markings that are highly resistant outdoors and can store ambient light to emit a diffuse luminosity in the dark, visible for more than 10 hours.

This patented innovation made in France was developed by OliKrom's R&D department. Several years of research and collaboration with the Eiffage Group were required to produce a photoluminescent paint suitable for road use, combining anti-slip properties, adhesion to the ground, colourimetry and chemical stability, with optimum luminous performance in terms of intensity and duration.

A paint with certified luminescent performance

This development has been approved by ADEME's "Roads of the Future" programme. The advent of photoluminescent markings is part of the emergence of tomorrow's infrastructures, which need to be safer, more economical and more eco-responsible.

Its level of luminescence (10 hours visibility) is certified class G according to the international standard ISO 17398.

Testimonial, from innovation to use

The phenomenon of luminescence (via phosphorescence in particular) has long been known indoors (for stickers with a phosphorescent effect in children's bedrooms or phosphorescent spray paint) but "until the summer of 2018, this property could not be used outdoors because it was not resistant to aggressions such as rain and ultraviolet rays", points out Hervé Dumont, Technical Director of Eiffage Route.

A few years ago, an attempt to apply glow-in-the-dark paint to roads in the Netherlands even failed, with the glow-in-the-dark paint showing signs of mould within just a few weeks.

Since summer 2018, we have been applying LuminoKrom® photoluminescent paint to the road markings on a national road (RN2) running from Paris to Soissons. This new luminescent horizontal signage is perfectly resistant to weather conditions and road traffic.

OliKrom's innovation now puts luminescence at the service of mobility safety. The stakes are high when it comes to improving road safety, because "reflective paint has a range of 30 to 40 metres (the range of the headlights it reflects), whereas photoluminescent signage can reach 80 to 100 metres", stresses Hervé Dumont.

The use of luminescent paints offers site managers an additional signage solution to enhance the protection of night-time travel on footpaths and cycle paths.
