Since autumn 2023, the municipality of Colmar has been conducting an innovative experiment on a section of cycle track. This safe lane uses a special paint, developed by a Bordeaux-based company, which has the particularity of glowing in the dark for ten hours.

Even when darkness envelops the city, the cycle path under the Mittelharth bridge remains visible, despite the absence of street lighting at this location. The photoluminescent paint is used to mark the path, providing cyclists with a luminous landmark.

"This stretch of road was notorious for accidents, with many people falling off their bikes. That's why we chose it for our experiment," explains Philippe Scheibling, Head of the Public Roads and Networks Department at the City of Colmar. "It's a soft light, which doesn't generate light pollution, but provides simple guidance in dark places", he adds.
